WHERE DID ALL THE SARDINES AT TRADER JOE’S GO???
Trader Joe’s hasn’t had ANY sardines on their shelves for some time now…Zero. Zilch. Nada.
If like me, you have been going there and looking at the sardine shelf and just seeing nothing for weeks and weeks and weeks, I found out there are a few reasons behind them being Missing In Action for some time. It’s way deeper than just “out of stock”.
Canned sardines are facing a massive global supply crunch. A perfect storm of skyrocketing consumer demand, warming ocean temperatures, and sweeping trade restrictions has caused the nutrient-dense fish to go missing in action
Why Sardines Are Missing In Action
Social Media Demand: For decades, sardines were viewed as a cheap, unglamorous pantry staple. This has changed.
Tinned fish has really gone viral on social media and platforms like TikTok, causing high demand and sudden spikes in buying causing frequent empty shelves by overbuying customers. Some people were buying a whole sleeve of sardines at a time before Trader Joe’s started to limit purchases to 1 or 2 cans, back when they still had stock and before they ran out of all of it.
So demand has greatly increased. I mean greatly. Industry managers report that consumer demand has spiked by 25% to 50% year-over-year, completely overwhelming operational capacities.
Couple that with…
Global Shortage: Supply is tight due to lower seasonal catch volumes, depleted fisheries and most critical shifting ocean temperatures affecting fish populations. Europe has had one of the hottest summers on record and oceans temperature has risen, which is bad for fisheries. Climate change is heavily disrupting global marine ecosystems and fish have changed migration patterns.
So there’s a Perfect Storm of events making for scarcity of sardines.
Nothing we can really do except wait for the fisheries to get supply going when they can and Trader Joe’s supplies return.
Ask your Front Desk if they have any idea when they expect restocking. Pretty sure they will say No Idea.
