Trader Joe’s Organic Non-Dairy SOY BEVERAGE (Soy Milk) Unsweetend

UNSWEETENED, NON-DAIRY, LACTOSE / DAIRY FREE

Ingredients: Water, Organic Soy Beans

Trader Joe’s Unsweetened ORGANIC SOY BEVERAGE (“Soy Milk”) is in one of the kinds of shelf stable 32 oz Tetra-Paks which don’t require refrigeration that TJ’s sells. (note: just to make things easy I may refer to this as “soy milk” rather than “soy beverage”. )

Trader Joe’s Soy Milk is just one of about three non-dairy beverages they carry on the shelves, non-refrigerated. They have Soy Milk, Oat Milk and Almond Milk and I buy all of them on a regular basis, switching them up as the mood strikes me. I basically like them all however I especially like the Soy Milk. Its pretty good for a commercially made soy milk, meaning similar to those sold on the shelf at supermarkets. Still none of these commercial soy milks compare to my favorite soy milks; meaning those old style small batch traditional Chinese “authentic” soy milks I get when I go to Chinatown or Flushing in NYC. For example, soy milk from 46 Mott Street which is really delicious (and if you ever go there, also be sure to check out the terrific soft tofu pudding with syrup). Another place in Chinatown being FONG ON, a 100 year old maker of artisanal soy milk and tofu products.

However for most of use the commercial brands of soy milk (for example, Silk) are easier to find on a daily basis and I TJ’s Soy Beverage soy milk is comparable, if not better, than some commercial brands. For one thing, this one has only two ingredients which I like. Some commercial soy milks add other ingredients, such as guar gum, to give it a silkier texture. Even some other Trader Joe’s fresh ones they sell in the Refrigerated case have more than two ingredients. This one just has water and organic soybeans.

Trader Joe’s Certified Organic Soy Beverage (SOY MILK) $1.99 ($2.29) for 32 oz.

Shelf stable paks are convenient as they don’t require refrigeration and can stay in your pantry and the Best By dates are about to 9-11 months away.

UPDATE (Nov 2023) This is their new package design (late 2023). Some Nutrition info has changed slightly. I tasted the old version and the new package side by side and could not taste any difference between the two. Possibly its just that the old info was not correct originally?

dairy free, gluten free, organic, vegan, kosher

Where are the soybeans sourced from? I just learned that soybeans are grown in the de-forested Amazon Rainforest. I like to drink soymilk, rather than other alt-milks, for the protein, but also want to be a responsible citizen.

For decades I’ve been searching for the perfect coffee creamer.. and finally found it. For my taste, this simple, organic soy milk hasn’t been topped as the perfect compliment to a great cup of coffee. Tastes great on its own as a creamy beverage too..

The organic Soy Beverage, unsweetened, shelf stable, has new packaging, and changes to the Nutrition Facts label and ingredient list, as of my recent purchase on Nov. 26, 2023. New one has more fat – 4.5 grams vs. 3 grams, and less fiber – 1 gram vs. 4 grams. Ingredient list on new container says water & organic soy beans, and old says water & WHOLE organic soy beans. Sounds like something is different in the mfg. process. Anyone out there have any idea? Thanks! Susan

Thanks Susan; I also noticed the new package design. One difference I noticed in Nutrition label was the calories (old package said 80 and new package says 100). They seemed to have changed something. A new vendor? I was planning on opening the new one and trying a taste test to see if I could taste any difference. Still nothing compares for me and tastes as good as the soy milk I buy in in Chinatown. To me, thats what real soy milk tastes like!

What I’d like to know is.. what am I getting for a 25% increase in calories per serving? I’m guessing it is the increased fat (50% more), I wonder if they reformulated to compete more with Silk Unsweetened, which is a bit more “creamy”, more similar to bovine milk.

Also, I have no problem with GMO soybeans, I consider the robust GMO soybean plant to be much better for the environment (lower pesticide use) and increased yields (feeding people). Fortunately 90% of the US soybean crop is GMO.

I hear you promacnyc! I’ve made soymilk myself, exactly once. It was laborious. If someone lives near a Chinatown in a bigger city, that is a great source of homemade soymilk.

I too was wondering about the change in the Nutrition label (20% more calories, 80 vs 100). I opened up an old box with the new box together to see if I could taste any difference, especially if the new package tasted “richer”. I could not taste any difference. I also once tried making my own soy milk from scratch. Yes so much work but that was good stuff. For me to, real soy milk is the kind I buy in Chinatown. Its delicious. The soy milk I buy in supermarkets and TJ’s are OK in a pinch but can’t compare. I just think these companies just use too much water so it’s not as rich.

I’m curious to know if the new one actually has more calories or if it’s that they got the nutrition wrong the first time and this is a correction as the new label reflects the USDA more closely in terms of total calories.

    Interesting thought Ginger Cooking.

Though it appears there are some changes in nutrients as well, for instance, the total fat is up 50% (saturated fat stays the same thankfully) and one thing I don’t like is they lowered the dietary fiber by 75% from 4g to 1g .. that is a bummer as fiber is good for so many things.

I still don’t like the 25% increase in calories, unless I’m getting something for it. Protein is still 9g.

I have tried it and it tastes good. Perhaps a bit more creamy.. maybe they are trying to compete with the refrigerated brands like Silk Unsweetened?
