Trader Joe’s Review BRIOCHE HOT DOG BUNS (for more than just hot dogs)


Yesterday was Memorial Day, and we got an invite to a neighbors for hot dogs, baked beans and the works. It was great. I brought the buns. These brioche buns are similar to TJ’s excellent FRENCH BRIOCHE BREAD. Soft, fluffy, yellow from eggs, they are a bit of an upgrade from the standard hot dog bun.

Made with eggs and butter in the brioche fashion.

We ate these with really good hot dogs (ours were from Shaller & Weber) but Trader Joe’s has good dogs too (organic uncured grass fed…) These buns were just perfect and went great with are grilled franks.

They are even better when lightly toasted so we did that of course. Yummy.

But nobody says they are “just for hot dogs”. You can use these top split buns for things besides hot dogs of course.

“Soft and fluffy these buns are top loading. A new world twist on an old world recipe. Hot dogs? Sure, but why stop there? Perfect for lobster rolls, egg salad, shrimp rolls or shrimp salad, grilled veggies, meatballs and marinara….”

You get the idea. These could be a bit versatile. Now these would be great for lobster roll, which I love. However as lobster is $$$$ you might also come up with a still delicious similar roll for way less using say Argentinian SHRIMP or LANGOSTINO TAILS. Or even TJ’s TEMPURA SHRIMP?

A few days later I used these brioche buns to make what I call A Poor Man’s Lobster Roll — a shrimp roll, basically the same thing just using shrimp. They were yummy!

And yes Trader Joe’s has these same fluffy yello brioche buns in a HAMBURGER BUNS as well!

These make a definite upgrade for either.

Trader Joe’s VEGAN BANANA BREAD with Walnuts


Trader Joe’s Vegan Banana Bread with Walnuts is achieved “without the use of dairy or eggs (or, of course, any other animal products).”

This is one of those TJ’s vegan products that appeals to non-vegans (like me) as well. I found this as tasty as other banana breads that aren’t vegan.

Trader Joe’s GLUTEN FREE CRISPBREAD


“It is believed that crispbread can be traced back to the Vikings, who stored it on ships for long journeys across sea.”

This is one of those rare Gluten Free products where the GF version is just as good, if not better, than the original one made with whole wheat.

I really like Trader Joe’s regular “Seeds and Whole Grain CRISPBREAD” which I reviewed before. Though I am not Gluten Free, I saw these and wanted to try the GF version of the terrific Norwegian crispbreads Trader Joe’s has. The ingredients are similar, mostly seeds, however the regular version has wheat in it.

They are all very hearty and very crunchy and are great as a cracker or as the base for an open faced Scandinavian style sandwich. Super with a spread or some cheese or even just butter. Or by itself it you like.

The GF version is also terrific. I can eat gluten so I don’t have to get the Gluten Free version but this is so good I would still buy it. Its excellent, really tasty. A little similar in taste and texture to the original one, but this GF version of course does not contain the whole wheat the regular version has, so no gluten here.

This version is made from sunflower seeds, oats, sesame seeds, flax seeds, rice bran and a few other ingredients. Healthy. Made in Norway. I love these style of breads and this gluten free one is also really good. The Gluten Free crispbread cost a bit more than the other ones. These go for $4.29, as compared to the regular Seeds and Grains Crispbread ($2.99).

Red Island Australian Early Harvest Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO)


NEW ITEM – “LIMITED”

“Super smooth, cold pressed and lightly fruity”

This is a single estate EVOO from of all places…Australia! I think I did a little double take when I saw the sign above saying “Australian Extra Virgin Olive Oil”. I’m not sure I’ve ever heard an Aussie olive oil before, so I had to give it a try. And you know what? It’s good. Very good. Definately “fruity and smooth”.

Trader Joe’s has this to say about it….

“Made with Early Harvest olives grown on a single estate, which are then cold pressed to preserve even more flavor, this extra special EVOO can be used in all the same kitchen contexts you’d employ for an everyday olive oil, like sautéeing or roasting. To take full advantage of its smooth and fruity profile, and nutty, delicately tannic finish, however, we find it truly excels when enjoyed as a base for a salad dressing, or when dunked with hunks of crusty bread.”

I think this Aussie EVOO is worth trying. As it says “Limited” that usually means when they sell out existing stock, that’s it.

“Kosher for Passover. Light and crispy with a mild flavor”

I like how Trader Joe’s puts a nice spin on matzos by saying they have a “mild flavor”. Let’s face it, matzos are at best bland so yes one could say a “mild flavor”. I find them almost tasteless on their own. But put some butter on them and then we’ll talk!

I tasted these Trader Joe’s matzo and they tasted like well matzo. In my time I’ve eaten plenty of matzos, and I am pretty Meh on them but especially with a premium butter all over them they make a good butter delivery system. While as a “cracker” or for a “base for hearty toppings” they remain rather bland, I have always found matzos to be best as a vehicle to put things on like a huge spoon of sweet delicious charoses (a sweet yummy mix of chopped apples, nuts and honey) or maybe made into a Matzobrei … as with addition of butter, eggs and some good jam and fried up they are pretty good.

Price wise this box of Matzo seems to be going for about half the price where I’ve just seen them in a supermarket and at Zabar’s. There they are at least $5 / box so this price is a plus.

If you are in the market for some matzo for your Seder, grab a box, and give these a try.

Trader Joe’s ENGLISH COTSWOLD Double Gloucester Cheese with onions/chives

Trying this for the first time, left me impressed. It is quite good. A very tasty English cheese. Here I find the addition of the onion/chives enhance the cheese, they don’t overpower it.

This is the kind of cheese you might find at an English pub. A semi soft cheese. Neither hard nor soft, its a bit softer than regular cheddar. Speaking of which this is fairly different than regular Cheddar cheese; as a “Gloucester cheese” is its own thing.

I first tasted it on its own, then on some plain crackers and found the flavor really lovely in both cases. Just very tasty. I think this would be great on a cheese plate or cheese board.

Equally nice is the way this cheese melted, which was very easily, as its not very hard to begin with. So this will be great to melt on things and cook with. I put it on a taco and it melted easily and was delicious especially when I let it get little brown. It would be great of course mixed into scrambled eggs. Would this make a great Welsh Rarebit? I think yes, so I intend to try that sometime.

This cheese is going for $10.99/lb, my hunk coming out to about $5. It is an Imported premium cheese, so that is not bad.

I would buy this again.

Trader Joe’s IRISH CHEESES (St. Patrick’s Day)


Getting near St. Patrick’s Day, I saw two new Irish cheeses in the cheese case at Trader Joe’s.

They looked interesting so I decided to try them.

The first one is called IRISH PORTER CHEDDAR CHEESE. As you can see, it’s got yellow areas mixed with brown areas which I imagine is the porter beer (the brown color makes me think of Guinness though that is technically a stout) Its a nice mild cheddar cheese. I think the porter mellows it out nicely. When you slice this cheese it looks really interesting with a pattern of swirls of brown and yellow.

The second cheese is also a cheese with a little something extra, here an IRISH CHEDDAR CHEESE with Irish Whiskey. This cheddar is a bit more robust than the other one, and this is very tasty too. It has a little more sharpness to it. However to be honest I could not distinguish the taste of whiskey but the cheese has a nice blend of flavors. Maybe a hint of whiskey is in there so very subtle; don’t expect this to taste like a big slug of Jameson’s.

Both of these cheeses were $11.99 a pound; a bit more expensive of course than many other imported cheddar cheese’s such as one my top favorite cheeses at Trader Joe’s: the excellent New Zealand Grass Fed Sharp Cheddar, which is now $6.99 a pound (used to be 5.99)

Still if you want to have some Irish cheese on the table for St. Paddy’s Day you may find either of these Irish cheddar cheeses worth trying. They would be nice on a cheese plate with an assortment of crackers and fruit. Or I imagine would match nicely with some Irish Soda Bread.

I assume these are “Seasonal” cheeses put out around the holiday; they may not be stocked forever, maybe just for a few months?

Trader Joe’s BLACK GARLIC CREAM CHEESE SPREAD

“Umami-rich flavor. A savory shmear for sandwiches, crackers and bagels.”

You may have heard Trader Joe’s new BLACK GARLIC CREAM CHEESE spread. I heard it was really good and a hit, so got some to review.

My take? I’m all in. Yes this black garlic cream cheese spread is delicious. I loved it immediately and found it so good. Full of umami from that mellow black garlic. (something that they used to actually sell fresh)

I put some of this spread on a bagel and topped it with cucumbers and the combo was of course so yummy.

This stuff is going to be great spread on toast, any bread or crackers. I tried it on some rice crackers. Yum. Next, I tried it as a dip for sliced veggies dipping in spears of cucumbers and carrots. This makes a perfect dip for crudités. Dip your baby carrot snacks in a little!

Honestly this is one of those “what wouldn’t this be good on” Trader Joe’s products. I am sure when you taste it you will get a few ideas where to use this. Putting this on Baked Potatoes is one No Brainer. Pasta? Yes, put a spoonful or two into almost any pasta dish and stir it in with a tablespoon of pasta water. Could I thin it with a touch of greek yogurt and serve on the side with a piece of grilled chicken, shrimp or fish? Why not indeed. So experiment away! Take it out and leave at room temp for an hour if want to let it get softer and more spreadable.

Black Garlic Cream Cheese Spread is $2.79 for an 8 oz tub.

I would buy this again.

Trader Joe’s RAISIN ROSEMARY CRISPS


“A crispy savory and sweet cracker to complement cheeses, dips, and toppings”

Wow, these little Trader Joe’s crackers are just delicious. First off, the texture is great, as they are very well baked and very crunchy, and have both sunflower and flax seeds.

The flavor of these is terrific, just the right amount of both sweet and savory. These are pretty small and delicate. They taste great on their own with nothing on them. You can eat them right out of the box.

However they will be even better if you put something on them. I tried them with cream cheese and loved the combo, then tried them with some Chevre and brie; they will match superbly with any cheese you put on them, or try them with charcuterie too like prosciutto.

These are one of those Trader Joe’s products that you could really impress guests with. Especially one of those cheese boards. Pretty natural sounding ingredients too. These are about $4 / box (5.3 oz)

Another knock it out of the ball park Trader Joe’s item. I would buy them again

Trader Joe’s Savory Thin Mini RICE CRACKERS (GF)


Trader Joe’s Thin Mini Rice Crackers –

I love these and buy them all the time.

Trader Joe’s sells a number of Japanese style crackers which are made from rice. In Japan crackers made from rice are very popular and are called senbei of which there are perhaps a hundred varieties. TJ’s sells about 3 or 4 different kinds of rice crackers.

These are called Savory Mini Thin Rice Crackers and they’re really tasty and really good. I just love them. They are about the size of a quarter. They’re incredibly crunchy and are delicious as a snack by themselves as well as equally delicious used like any cracker. Spread something on them, some cheese or spread or peanut butter and jam. Top them with a slice of ham, cheese, or whatever you want. If you are someone who is Gluten Free (I’m not) these are primarily made from rice. Ingredients listed are : rice flour, sesame seeds, safflower oil, tamari soy sauce powder, maltodextrin, salt and garlic powder. These light colored ones are $3.49 a bag (8 oz). There’s another multiseed kind (with Tamari) that are darker that are also good and are $3.99.

According to the Nutrition facts label there are 130 calories in 38 crackers! So pretty Low Calorie as far as snacks go and not heavy in the Sodium department either. So I’d say this is a pretty healthy snack as far as crackers you can buy.
