Trader Joe’s THAI PEANUT SATAY SAUCE

New item: THAI PEANUT SATAY SAUCE

Ingredients include; Coconut milk, coconut sugar, peanuts, red curry paste, lemongrass, shallots, galangal, tamarind, coriander, cumin….

Trader Joe’s THAI PEANUT SATAY SAUCE is a new addition to their line of Thai and Asian sauces and condiments. (Jan 2024)

TJ has this to say: “Made for us by a supplier in Thailand, our Peanut Satay Sauce starts with a base of rich coconut milk, peanuts, and aromatic red curry paste, to which our supplier adds a mix of savory seasonings including lemongrass, shallot, garlic, galangal, and tamarind paste. In addition to making a delicious dipping sauce for grilled, skewered proteins of all kinds (we’re especially fond of it with shrimp, pork loin, or tofu), it also makes a fantastic condiment for burgers and lettuce wraps, and a superb sauce for serving over Thai Wheat Noodles. And for an effortless and flavorful salad dressing, simply add a bit of Rice Vinegar to a few spoonfuls of Satay Sauce in a bowl, mix, and enjoy.”

I got a jar to taste and review recently. My initial take is it’s pretty good. Thai food can be very bold with flavors. For my taste buds while this Satay Sauce is kind of tasty, I just wish it had more “oomph”. That is way bolder with flavors so that it really tasted “Thai”. Personally I wanted more more of everything (more peanuts, more galangal, and way more red curry paste)

Its OK but just way too much on the tame side, and Thai food is not tame in the least. I’m pretty sure a Thai baby could handle this and I don’t mean just in the heat level. So while I wish it was a little bolder never the less this new sauce is kind of tasty — IT CAN BE IMPROVED.

So I I say it has potential. If you fix it up a bit, adding a thing or two. Certainly a squeeze of lime juice for a little more sourness. It’s not spicy, so if you like spicy, just add a bit of your favorite spicy condiment. For instance Peri-Peri or Bomba to jazz it up. Want it more peanut-y? I sure do. I mixed in a few spoons of crunchy peanut butter and it got way better. Crushed garlic too.

But even if you just use as-is, this can be OK in a pinch (if you are not Thai). Satay usually means grilled items so you can use this for grilled proteins or the like. Say with chicken, shrimp, fish, pork, beef or grilled tofu for that matter. You can marinate them in some sauce for say 30 minutes, then grill it. You can also brush some sauce on at the end of grilling for a nice glaze. It can burn so be careful.

The Satay Sauce can be used in a number of ways. At it’s simplest you could just use it on the side or spoon some on top. Say with grilled chicken, meat, fish, shrimp or tofu. Here I served the satay sauce with a grilled chicken breast, and it works great with chicken. Or anything for that matter.

Salad Dressing – “For an effortless and flavorful salad dressing, simply add a bit of Rice Vinegar to a few spoonfuls of Satay Sauce in a bowl, mix, and enjoy.” – Trader Joe’s.

Is THAI SATAY sauce good for noodles? Very much so! This sauce will definitely be good with say your Thai Wheat Noodles or Squiggly Noodles dishes. Add a bit of soy sauce and a squeeze of lime juice too and maybe some chopped cilantro. And again, I would mix in a few tablespoons of crunchy peanut butter.

Thai Peanut Noodles: Mix the sauce into your cooked noodles. Add a nice amount and also a a little soy sauce, some lime juice, and if like spicy maybe some Sriracha, Bomba, or Peri-Peri. Mix in a few tablespoons of crunchy peanut butter. I would add vegetables of ones choosing: maybe shredded cooked carrots, peppers, and green onions. Cilantro too if you like it. If you have some crushed peanuts on top that will help.

So I think one could come up with something tasty using this sauce, especially if you experiment a bit with it. Adding some stuff.

It’s $2.29 for an 8 oz jar.

I would buy it again (I just wish it were more authentically Thai)

Trader Joe’s CASTILE PEPPERMINT SOAP

Saw it in the NEW ITEMS section: Trader Joe’s PEPPERMINT CASTILE SOAP – “A multi purpose cleaner made with olive, coconut, hemp and jojoba oils” – “SHAMPOO, BODY WASH, BATH, HOUSEHOLD CLEANER, LAUNDRY CLEANER”

As you can see this soap is good for almost everything!

Especially if you are of a certain age when you see this blue bottle which says PEPPERMINT CASTILE SOAP it will immediately make you think of the very famous bottle of DR BRONNER’S Castile Soap, an iconic brand. Those blue bottles had a label with a ton writing on it, mostly about World Peace. Dr. Bronner;s has been around for ever (founded 1948). I love the stuff and used it forever until it got quite pricey.

Dr Bronners peppermint soap is a product I am very fond of. Its good for EVERYTHING. The peppermint Dr Bronners is so minty fresh it would make your scalp tingle if you used as shampoo. “Dilute, dilute, OK” it said on the label filled with a ton of the Dr’s writings about World Peace. Don’t get it in your eyes. So Dr. Bronner’s is one of those “old fashioned” products that is so useful and so classic it’s actually been copied at least a few times that I know of. Bed Bath Beyond had their own version of this liquid peppermint Castile soap and now Trader Joe’s has come out with their version. I’m very happy to see this.

Its made with Olive Oil, Coconut Oil and Hemp Oil (!) plus has two kinds of mint.

I don’t have a bottle of the original soap right now to compare Trader Joe’s version to, but I liked this. Trader Joe’s version of the famous blue bottle of Peppermint Castile soap quite good.

It has a wonderful peppermint smell. This is trulya “multi-purpose” product that you can literally use all over the house: in the bath, in the kitchen, in the laundry, on your floors, really all over the house. A little bit of it goes a long way too. A little squirt of this soap on your hands makes a good lather and your nose will love the fresh minty smell.

BODY WASH/SHAMPOO/BATH – I put a very tiny squirt on a bath poof and just the little amount made an enormous amount of soapy lather in a few seconds. It smelled wonderful and minty fresh. It felt refreshing. Shampoo- It will make your scalp feel tingly and clean from the peppermint (make sure not to let this get in your eyes !)

LAUNDRY – I put it on a clean, washed old T shirt I use for the gym. I hand washed it in hot water with some of this soap. Wow. The water got so dirty it wasn’t funny. This is great for laundry and will make clothes smell great and refresh clothes, especially things like gym clothes or socks that might have odor.

Trader Joe’s CASTILE PEPPERMINT SOAP is $5.99 for a 16 oz bottle. For comparison Target sells Dr. Bronner’s Castile Soap for $17 for a 32 oz bottle. So decent price for this quality Castile soap.

I liked this a lot. I would buy it again.

“AVOID CONTACT WITH EYES” (tip: the mint is strong so be careful getting this near your eyes)

Trader Joe’s HAND & BODY CREAM

Trader Joe’s “HAND & BODY CREAM Made with Moroccan Argan Oil”

My wife said, “for the price, it’s good”. $3.99 for a 16 oz bottle.

She thought if from Sephora it would be 4 times that price.

Trader Joe’s: Ode to DELICATA SQUASH

An Ode To Delicata Squash

Usually starting in Fall, Trader Joe’s will have a few kinds of squash. Acorn, Butternut….and I really like those. However some squash are a bit of work to prep, especially if you have to get the skin off. Generally I think, “too much work”. Which brings me to a favorite kind of squash, because its The. Easiest. Squash: Delicata! I’m so fond of it, if I see these at Trader Joe’s I will usually grab one and toss it in my basket.

A few years ago, TJ’s sold them for 99 cents each. They now cost $1.49. That is still pretty cheap, especially if you can score a big one.

So what I really love about the DELICATA sqush is you don’t have to peel them. Which makes them so much easier. Delicata which means “delicate” of course. They have thin (edible) skin. Compared to acorn or butternut squash, which can take 10-15 minutes of serious knife work, these are so much easier. They take 1-2 minutes to prep. For me, that’s a squash game changer.

I made delicata recently and took a few pictures to show how easy it is to make them. Sure you can roast them. They are great that way. But you don’t have to. Mostly I just toss them into a pan with olive oil and garlic. Which is a little easier than roasting in my opinion and almost as good.

The ones here I made them as the ingredient for a pasta dish. I just added the pasta right in the same pan to finish the dish with bit of alfredo sauce (but even just butter and grated cheese would be fine).

Here’s my prep – Rinsed them. Took a teaspoon and scraped out seeds. Sliced them up, a bit thin (1/4″ or so thick) as I was going to sauté them. If I was going to roast them in the oven I would have cut them a bit thicker.

In this case I just tossed them into a non stick pan with 2 tablespoons of olive oil and crushed garlic. Salt and pepper. Sauté them for maybe 15-20 minutes on medium stirring frequently so they don’t burn. Let them get nice and brown almost as if you had roasted them. This is easier for me as I don’t even have to turn on the oven.

They make a great side dish, or use the cooked squash as an ingredient, for example in a pasta dish. Add them to cooked penne or farfalle, either with just butter and cheese or something a little creamy like alfredo or cacio e pepe.

If you never tried them before, I hope this give you the idea to try Delicata Squash and then you may grow to love them as much as I do; here’s some links to cooking ideas using delicata squash…..

Trader Joe’s MISO RAMEN SOUP (cup)

My wife bought this “MISO RAMEN SOUP”. Now she loves ramen and will usually buy her favorite, Korean Shin Ramen, which is very good. It costs more. She made this and when I asked her what she thought her review was pretty short: “I’ll never buy this again”

Inside the cup there’s some noodles which don’t look like the dried ramen you are used to. These are straight wheat noodles which look semi-dry (pre-boiled?). There’s not a lot of noodles. There’s a dried packet of stuff (the soup) plus a little clear packet, which we thought was one of those drying packets and almost threw it away. Nope, its part of the ramen set; The clear packet contains a little bit of oil you add along with the dry packet of miso soup.

I tasted her ramen and here’s what I thought of this product.

The Good: The broth was actually pretty decent. Better than I expected. It tastes like a Japanese miso soup broth. There was even a piece or two of wakame (seaweed) floating around in the soup. Some umami from seaweed and mushrooms. The Ingredient list reads fairly natural; you don’t see wierd names of chemicals just dried ingredients. Broth 7/10

The Bad: Ramen? Well they really messed up the “ramen” part of this “miso ramen soup”. Noodles are lousy. We both thought the noodles were not very good and to add insult to injury they are very skimpy with the noodles. These noodles are not dry but a little flexible, like a semi-dried, pre-boiled noodles? They barely had any texture or bite to them after the recommended six minutes. Very MEH as they should be the star. Noodles 5/10

The Sodium content is listed as 870, which is almost 40% of your daily recommended level of salt. We cut that down by only using about 3/4 of the packet. Naturally that will make the broth a little less strong. It was fine for us. All instant ramen tends to have quite a bit of sodium. Always check the labels. This really applies to all the Asian products at TJ’s.

If you decide to actually try this, it may be better if you try adding a poached egg and chopped scallions as they suggest.

$1.89

I had an idea that since the broth was not bad but the noodles are Meh I thought one might combine this with the packet of cheap ramen dried noodles you might have in the house. I used to get them 5/$1 a few years back!

If you want good ramen, Korean Shin Ramen runs rings around this and most instant ramen though it costs more.

We would not buy this again.

Trader Joe’s MIDDLE EASTERN BEEF KEBABS

RAVE

I was pleasantly surprised by Trader Joe’s frozen “Middle Eastern Style Kebabs, Seasoned Beef Patties” at how good these are. I thought these are good enough that one could imagine either you made them yourself or from a Middle Eastern joint. I found these quite tasty. Flavorful with lots of nice spices. These are what you would call KOFTE kebabs. Ground meat with veggies and seasonings. Now, I’ve made these style of kebabs myself in the past often, and honestly TJ’s version almost tasted like something I might have made myself.

The Trader Joe’s Beef Kebabs are well seasoned with an authentic Middle Eastern style flavor – they have coriander, cumin, allspice, cloves plus other spices.

The ingredients listed in these are nice and simple, and sound pretty much like what I would use if I made them:

ING: Ground beef, onions, eggs, breadcrumbs, parsley and seasonings (salt, sugar, paprika, garlic powder, allspice, pepper, coriander, cloves, cumin, nutmeg, black pepper).

I was even surprised that my wife , who is really tough on Trader Joe’s frozen foods, liked these! She said they were tasty. In fact she even asked if I had made them or bought them from TJ’s (hah!) That’s a good review.

Wrapped up in the LAVASH flatbread, with a yogurt garlic sauce, lettuce and onions…..

COOKING: Personally I think they benefit from a getting nice and browned up. As brown as possible. I cooked them in a pan on the stove – in spite of them not even listing this as way to make them. Trust me you can cook these in a pan which for me its the best way, especially as I cooked other things at the same time in the same pan. I added a handful of sliced onions and a tablespoon of olive oil. Some sliced garlic will not hurt!

When it was all done I I warmed up my flatbread in the same pan after I took everything out.

Other ways they list are oven, grill and air fryer too and microwave ( I say don’t just nuke it!)

I just put a little olive oil in a pan and cooked them on medium low until they were hot and nicely browned, which took maybe 7-8 minutes per side. You can also make them in the oven or in an air fryer or on a grill. Microwave? I wouldn’t though the package says so. Reason being I think they will be far better getting a bit more browning from actual cooking.

These can be a great lunch or dinner. I served the kebabs on flatbread with veggies and a sauce. Actually the first time I used flour tortillas as my flatbread and those work fine or serve them with Pita or Naan or best perhaps might be TJ’s LAVASH flat bread. I topped them with thinly sliced red onions, tomatoes and parsley. Then put sauce on top. Cucumbers, red or yellow peppers, or some greens all will work great with these kebabs.

SAUCE: I made an easy sauce of Greek yogurt and garlic – or just use use TJ’s Tzaziki sauce which is basically that with a little cucumber added. Or spread your bread with TJ’s yummy garlic spread. A few drops of lemon too will send these skyward.

On the side, I made some a delicious Yemeni rice dish, a recipe I found on YouTube, which I put below if you want to try that. It tastes amazing with these kebabs but even just some Basmati or Jasmine rice will be great as well.

I think these are one of the better frozen foods I’ve found at Trader Joe’s, along with many of the frozen Indian dishes.

They were about $6.50 (12 oz) with 6 kebabs in the bag (update: about $7.49 now)?

These would be great to have in the freezer to come up with a quick dinner easily.

I would buy them again.

Want to try your hand at making these style of “kofte kebabs”. Here’s a recipe for a Lebanese beef kofte. You might even use the Organic Ground Beef if you made them yourself.

Trader Joe’ NUTS ABOUT ROSEMARY Mixed Nuts

“The nuts. The rosemary. The Crunch…”

They had this New Item right near the checkout line and so I was waiting I checked it out and then I noticed the sample station (Back, finally. Yeh!) happened to be offering samples of this so I grabbed some to taste. Yum. So good. This nut mix really looked “gourmet” with big pieces of top quality nuts: almonds, cashews, hazelnuts, pecans and it had a little flavor of rosemary which elevated the whole combination.

I assume this is a seasonal Fall/Xmas special nut mix and is specially geared for Thanksgiving and holiday get togethers. This would impress any guest who would probably ask you where you got it.

TJ’s says: “Every good get-together needs a good snack mix, which is precisely why we like to keep a canister of our Nuts About Rosemary Mix on hand…roasted almonds, cashews, hazelnuts (aka Filberts) and pecans, all mixed together with a rosemary and sea salt spice blend spiked with just a touch of sugar.”

Trader Joe’s REUSABLE SPONGE CLEANING CLOTHS

This was in NEW ITEMS. Verdict? It’s handy, handy, handy to have in the kitchen. Made of cotton and cellulose. They’re like a thin sponge. Absorbent. Reusable. “Ideal replacements for paper towels ” = Eco. We’ve used them for washing dishes, cleaning countertops, wiping cabinets. Large at about 8 inches square but just leave them like that as you can easily fold it up in half or quarters. They seem durable. They come five in a package ($4.99 so figure about a buck apiece, not too bad. Hopefully one will last at least a month or so? We’ll see. I even found another use that these are perfect for: namely using it to open a jar (one on the top and for really tricky jar, another on the bottom.

“Wife Approved” (she gave these a thumbs up. These are good and I would buy again along with TJ’s Amazing Cleaning Cloths which sell for $2.99. Those are also super handy, and when they wear out I used them for rags, floor cleaners, etc.

Trader Joe’s Clarified Butter (aka Ghee)

There is just one ingredient in this: “unsalted butter”. This is sold on the shelf as you don’t need to it in the fridge, only “store in a cool dry place”.

Clarified butter is a process where regular butter has been “clarified” (cleared/purified), meaning the milk solids have been separated, and removed. This leaves a clear yellow liquid: (clarified butter). In India there is something similar called, Ghee. One reason for doing this is once butter has been clarified it has a higher smoke point. Another big reason especially in India with Ghee is that ghee does not need to be refrigerated.

Ghee is used all over Indian cuisine. The label on the jar of Trader Joe’s Clarified Butter says that is is “Produced according to authentic Indian practices”

In Indian cooking “ghee” is ubiquitous. Many Indian recipes specify using ghee. A big reason ghee is practical in India is once you clarify to butter it requires no refrigeration which is why you will find Trader Joe’s clarified butter on the shelf along with their oil and such.

Some classic French recipes also call for clarified butter including many classic sauces. Once you clarify butter it raises the “smoke point”. You can heat clarified butter to a higher temperature without burning it. (Sidenote: “Brown Butter” (Beurre Noisette) is the opposite! Called for in some French recipes and classic sauces, brown butter on the other hand is regular butter heated up until it becomes a toasty golden brown color, just this side of being burned/blackened (that’s beurre noire folks). Brown Butter tastes and smells incredible and is simple to make and quite an amazing thing if you’ve never tried it (try it with Gnocchi).

If you wanted to make clarified butter, you do it by heating up butter slowly in a pot, let any milk solids settle and slowly pour off the top yellow liquid on top so you end up with just the clear yellow liquid. That liquid is “clarified butter” or ghee.

https://www.culinaryhill.com/how-to-make-clarified-butter/

Or just buy this “Ghee” already made at Trader Joe’s for $4.99 (8 oz)
